Helen Newman

Helen Newman is an award winning Australian filmmaker whose work has taken her around the world documenting stories from the inspiring to the heartbreaking.

As a filmmaker Helen has travelled to Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, India Timor-Leste, and America as well as across Australia documenting stories in a broad range of situations; war zones, refugee camps, civil rights protests, families in grief and crisis, celebrations - and tragedies. Together with Emmy Award winning filmmaker Tahir Cambis, she co-directed feature documentary ‘Anthem’ which went on to win Best Australian Documentary, 2006

Working with Melbourne Theatre Company, Circus Oz, Flying Fruit Fly Circus and various other music and theatre groups Helen also films and edits nationally and internationally acclaimed live performances.

Helen’s current major project is feature documentary, ‘Sovereignty’ - an intimate, lyrical and at times irreverent journey across Australia exploring the global questions of indigenous identity and sovereign rights.

Apart from her ongoing documentary projects Helen also works with various community and art groups as a video artist, filmmaker and editor, and facilitates filmmaking workshops.
