Dr Ruth De Souza

Ruth De Souza is a writer, podcaster, researcher, nurse and consultant. Ruth co-teaches the course Creative Practice in Place: Working on unceded lands in the School of Art at RMIT University. She is also an Honorary Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences- Te Ara Hauora A Pūtaiao at Auckland University of Technology. Key Arts Activities: Collaborative Art Projects: Ruth was part of a group at RMIT's School of Art who created "The Nurses and Midwives Art Exchange," a collaborative project that invited nurses and midwives to submit creative responses about their pandemic experiences. They were matched with RMIT School of Art students who created artworks in response to these submissions. This project received a 2022 College of Design and Social Context Learning and Teaching Award and was featured in the Archive of Feelings exhibition for the Big Anxiety Festival. Research Through Arts: Ruth uses practice-led research methods informed by performance techniques, including a pilot project that staged encounters between practicing artists who identify as having asylum seeker, refugee and/or First Nation backgrounds. Arts and Health Integration: She focuses on fostering culturally responsive practices through research in health and the arts. Her approach combines her nursing and health research background with creative practice to address issues of cultural safety, equity, and social justice through artistic expression and community-engaged arts projects. Community Engagement: Ruth has extensive networks across the Melbourne creative industries and served on the Fair Play project reference committee.
