Chelle Destefano
My practice as a visual and multidisciplinary artist, born in 1979. living in (country town, I cant disclose due to dangers of publicising where I am due to dangerous family members sorry - can you let me know if this info will be private and safe if I tell you my location?) and working in Naarm (Melbourne) regularly, involves drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles and sculpture, and sometimes combine these mediums into one body to inform my practice. I focus on current issues conflating with my identity and style of works that create discussions and questions. As a Deaf artist, I communicate through drawing and painting my thoughts and concerns such as the current housing crisis, rising homelessness and increasing gap between the wealthy and poor, and the gap between races and different backgrounds and the impacts climate change is having on everyone. I’m working towards larger scale works on paper that discuss the impacts of climate change and housing issues on everyone.
I was a winner of the Nillumbik Art Prize (2025) and Lake Art Prize (2020) for my multidisciplinary textile work on inclusion and I have been a finalist in a number of art prizes including the Muswellbrooke Art Prize (2023), Footscray Art Award (2021, 2023), Wyndham Art Prize (2022), Banyule Art Award for Works on Paper (2019 and 2021), the Lyn McCrea Memorable Drawing Prize (2019), Fisher's Ghost Art Award (2020, 2022), the Noel Counihan Commemorative Art Award (2019, 2020, 2022), the Midsummer Post Art Award (2020), and The Incinerator Art Award (2020).
