Writing an Artist Biography

Your ‘bio’ is a short biography that tells the viewer about who you are and what you do. It is your resume in paragraph form. Your bio will include all or some of the following details:

  • Your name
  • Place of birth, Aboriginal language group or other information about where you have lived
  • A little bit of relevant history and background
  • Description of any mediums or themes that have appeared consistently throughout your practice
  • Education such as post-secondary credentials or residencies
  • Professional work or employment history in the arts that is relevant to the work being exhibited
  • Selected projects and exhibitions as well as related creative activities
  • Grants and awards received
  • Other experiences that led to your current profession – was there a moment when you discovered or realised you were an artist?

Tip:

Write in the third person and refer to yourself by your full name. Rather than speaking as ‘I’ you will write about yourself as ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘they’.

Avoid using ‘art-speak’ or art jargon to describe yourself and your practice.
