This year we welcomed new member, Aidan Nicolson, into the fold. Aidan runs Dirty Angel Comedy in Warrnambool. Dirty Angel started in October 2014 after Aidan did RAW Comedy in Geelong and realised that he wanted to do more and more stand-up comedy. But he didn’t want to drive to Melbourne to do a 5-minute spot somewhere. Six hours in the car for 5 minutes on stage – the maths just didn’t work for him while he was also working full time and had two young kids.
Aidan figured there were other people having similar experiences. He looked at comics like Tom Ballard and Dave Hughes that have become some of Australia’s biggest comics but grew up in towns with zero comedy scene. So, if Dirty Angel Comedy was professional enough to have a mission statement, it would be something along the lines of ‘To give southwest Victorian locals a chance to have a crack at stand-up’.
Aidan’s journey has been a “gradual build”. According to Aidan “It still amazes me when I run into people and they find out about Dirty Angel Comedy and say ‘Ohh, I’ve never heard of that, where is it?’ But it has a great name for itself. The agents have heard about us and are starting to send ‘As Seen On TV’ comics down now. Having acts like Kirsty Webeck, Luke Heggie, Emma Holland, Dave Thornton etc wanting to come to Dirty Angel Comedy….that’s pretty cool. Putting local comedians on as warm-up acts…that’s just icing on the cake.”
When asked why he joined RAV, Aiden said , “I jumped in with the RAV because I have attended a couple of their workshops and can really see how they can help build Dirty Angel Comedy. They’ve helped me out with social media strategies and brand identity. Perhaps even better, I’ve been able to jump into their Artists’ Public Liability Insurance, which saves me over $1,300 a year. I’ve only just signed up with RAV late last year, but I have already seen the benefits. Next on my list is to check out the access to RAV grants.”
