Write and Roll
Teaching creative writing, story telling and promoting creativity through games.
By Emma Livesey-Green
Creative experience available on demand as part of the 2027 Creative Learning Program
The Arts – Drama | English | Humanities| Critical & Creative Thinking
In this workshop students will be led by Emma through the process of building a world, creating protagonists, and then role-playing as those protagonists through a narrative to collaboratively tell a story together. The educational basis for the workshop/s is Places in Time, an original tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) developed by Emma to combine traditional TTRPG gameplay with place theory and creative writing conventions. As such, pedagogy and gameplay and intertwined throughout the workshop with learning outcomes being delivered as students create and play.
Write and Roll is a program that can be tailored to suit the needs of the school, both with regards to learning outcomes and session numbers/lengths. While creative writing is the primary focus of the workshop, it can also be adapted to teach other subjects such as literature, history, etc group sizes can be as low as 2 students or as large as an entire class.
Depending on chosen workshop focus, ethical capability and intercultural capability may also be explored.
Places in Time was created as part of PhD thesis research supported through an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship. Write and Roll is a successor to this research.
