English | The Arts Drama & Music | Critical and Creative Thinking
In this workshop, students will be introduced to the art of freestyle rap & poetry, a perfect vehicle for building confidence & public speaking skills while introducing them to performance poetry & musical improvisation in a playful, accessible & immersive way.
Acclaimed freestyler, author, TEDxMelbourne performer & educator, Flash Poetry, and his co-facilitator, Carmen Thea, begin with an interactive explanation & demonstration of the fundamentals & philosophy of improvisation & freestyle (rhyme, rhythmic/musical speech, creative language use, vulnerability & embracing the unknown). The students then split into small groups for a series of guided activities focusing on creative risk-taking, playful storytelling and supporting each other in expanding their comfort zones & finding their own unique voices. Finally, students will be offered the chance to perform (if they choose) in front of the cohort—a reliably uplifting & memorable moment, with the workshop closing with an unforgettable, bespoke Flash Poetry freestyle based on the student’s suggestions & the key themes of the workshop.
“Nico aka Flash Poetry delivered a fabulous session to our Year 8 students on freestyle rap and performance poetry. With separate sessions delivered to girls and boys, he shared his love for words, and for bringing language to life through spoken performance. During the session, the students visibly grew in confidence as they learned to develop their own rhythm and vocal style. There was an infectious vibe in the room. Nico moved through different activities, creating a safe space that empowered students to attempt improvisation and give voice to their own thoughts.” – Jennifer, Year 11 Coordinator
“Nico presented at our Youth Take Over Night, where he taught the youth the art of freestyle rapping in an engaging and interactive way. It was especially supportive of the more vulnerable youth who attended, helping them build confidence, express themselves creatively, and come out of their shells. Freestyle rap is great for engaging and giving a voice to youth who are often disengaged.” – Diana, Children’s and Youth Services Librarian
