Class Clowns – Comedy Crash Course
Bringing comedy to the classroom – a fun, engaging way for students to build confidence and find their voice.
By Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Creative experience available on demand as part of the 2026 Creative Learning Program
The Arts – Drama | English | Personal & Social Capability
In this workshop students will work with professional comedians trained by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to explore comedy as an artform. Crash Course gives young people an authentic channel for self-expression and a safe, low-stakes environment to explore their funny ideas with confidence.
Students start with playful warm-up games to build group trust, move into guided joke-writing exercises drawn directly from real life, and finish by performing short sketches or original sets for their peers.
Engaging with comedy helps students develop public speaking skills, confidence, and creative resilience while learning how to articulate their unique personal perspectives. Through shared laughter and creative collaboration, these sessions boost self-esteem and strengthen communication skills in a dynamic group environment.
“Our Comedy unit has become a highlight of the Year 9 school year for not only the students and teachers but parents and the wider community. Developing their own comedy act is a chance for our students to articulate their ideas and understandings; in effect creating their own social commentary of the world in which they live.”
– Susan, Melbourne Girls’ College“Class Clowns is about brand-new talent and ideas, building confidence in young people and watching them experience the pure joy of being on stage” – Anne Edmonds, Comedian
