Discover how expressive marks in soot ink and charcoal can capture the energy and character of Australian wildlife

Workshop in Korean Ink Wash & Charcoal

By Narsha Studio

Creative experience available on demand as part of the 2027 Creative Learning Program

The Arts – Visual Art | Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia

In this workshop, students discover how expressive mark-making can capture the movement, energy and character of Australian native animals.

Drawing on Korean ink painting traditions, students are introduced to soot ink and charcoal as tools for observation — learning to respond to a subject with gesture before refining form and detail, using Korean brush techniques.

After a guided demonstration, students choose from a series of Australian animal references and develop their own interpretation, supported by individual guidance from the artist. Depending on session length, students may also explore colour application using a minimal watercolour palette. The workshop concludes with a group reflection, where students discuss the energy, character and how they are expressed through the mediums. Students leave with a completed piece and a stronger sense of observation, risk-taking and personal expression through art.
