Jayne Newgreen

I’m an emerging Australian artist working primarily in fibre and woven textiles. My practice centres on the slow, meditative process of hand weaving, often using natural and repurposed materials.

I often work with sakiori, a traditional Japanese technique that weaves narrow strips of fabric into new cloth. Found and familiar fibres, such as paper or denim are favourite materials of mine - I’m drawn to each fibres use, its history, weight, and familiarity. I’ve also woven with unconventional fibres such as paper, VHS tape and plastic twine, pushing the boundaries of what can be woven, and the story it can tell.

I came to weaving from a background in photography and a lifelong interest in visual arts and storytelling. After years of working with images through a lens, first in the darkroom, then digitally, I craved a more tactile, hands-on medium. The loom became a site for exploration and expression: a place where material, memory, and narrative could intertwine.

My work explores themes of identity, place, and our relationship with nature. I’m especially interested in how fibre can serve as both a surface and a voice for personal and shared story telling. I often return to a single idea or object, reworking and reweaving it over time to better understand it.

I live and work in regional Victoria, where the bush and its textures are a constant source of inspiration. Though relatively new to weaving, I’m deeply committed to my practice. Each piece I create is an act of enquiry - a quiet investigation into material, process, and concept, allowing meaning to emerge over time
