Impact Story: Colac CAMP in a Can

Colac CAMP in a Can was a collaboration between Making Change, Studio 92 (a supported art studio based in Colac), Geelong’s Back to Back Theatre, (it’s no) drama (disability-led physical theatre company based in Gippsland) and Colac Performing Arts and Cultural Centre

CAMP is an ongoing Back to Back Theatre initiative that welcomes community members, with and without disability who love, or are curious about, performance making. A single day version of CAMP workshop delivery was facilitated by Making Change after conversations with Studio 92 during the initial meet and greet phase at the start of the project. While CAMP is an incredibly valuable program, access for more remote regional attendees is difficult.

24 artists with and without disability attended the workshop in Colac. Several artists without disability attended the workshops as a way of introduction into working in the all-abilities space.

Ongoing impacts from this project include:

  • Back to Back Theatre is looking at the development of a model for CAMP in a Can – a mobile, regional outreach version of its highly successful Geelong-based workshops. They are also looking at ways in which their creative producers and members of Theatre of Speed can undertake in-place training so that versions of CAMP can be offered by other supported studios throughout the State.
  • Studio 92 are engaging two performing arts/movement practitioners to develop a movement and dance program to expand its offerings.
  • Connections were made between Back to Back, (It’s no) drama, Studio 92 and individual practitioners to share knowledge and initiate collaboration.
  • Two Colac-based musicians are developing a ‘Find Your Voice’-style choir for the local community and are using their connection with Making Change, Back to Back and Studio 92 to develop a staged proposal.
