Talk Up
Touring as part of the 2023 Arts & Education Program
Self-expression | Creative Thinking | Celebration of Individuality
Talk Up is an engaging, high-energy performance from two of Australia’s most respected Hip-Hop artists. Award-winning performers Mantra and DJ Sizzle deliver a powerful, interactive live-music experience aimed at empowering students. Students are encouraged to participate at every step as they gain an insight into the Hip-Hop genre and artform, build their confidence and make their voices heard!
A potent introduction to poetry, storytelling, song writing and music composition, Hip-Hop and Rap give students the permission to be themselves, connect with their identity and celebrate their individuality in a unique and powerful way.
Hip-Hop is currently the biggest genre of music on the planet, it has defied the odds and established itself as one of the most potent cultural and social movements of the last 100 years. From its humble beginnings in the Bronx, New York City, Hip-Hop has long been a voice for the voiceless and a lifeline for the disempowered, speaking truth to power every step of the way.
Talk Up incorporates original songs, improvised freestyle rapping, DJ turntable demonstrations and live electronic music production, with students invited to participate throughout. Not only will students gain an insight into the Hip-Hop genre and artform, they will also have the opportunity to join the performers on stage and try it out for themselves. Mantra and DJ Sizzle will support the young people to build their confidence, step up to the mic and make their voices heard.
Hip-Hop allows us to tell our own story in our own way, making it a valuable tool in exploring themes around cultural diversity, identity, self-expression, confidence and self-awareness.
With decades of experience in the music industry under their belts, Mantra and DJ Sizzle are seasoned performers and have appeared on some of Australia’s biggest stages. Mantra has released several critically acclaimed albums and is regarded as one of the country’s finest lyricists. DJ Sizzle has toured extensively both here and overseas, sharing the stage some of Hip-Hop’s most legendary names and appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2013. Both artists are extremely passionate about working with young people and have devoted much of their time to developing creative learning programs for schools and community organisations.
Talk Up is a one-of-a-kind live music experience and a potent introduction to poetry, storytelling and songwriting. Hip-Hop and Rap give students the permission to be themselves, connect with their identity and celebrate their individuality in a unique and powerful way.
