Two artists. Two continents. One epic current. Crossing Currents brings the heat of Latin American magical realism and the creative spirit of French folklore to Victoria, a colourful collision of stories, identities and dreams. This is art that moves, speaks and dances.
“Crossing Currents is a collaborative show by Future Cultures, the Melbourne-based artist collective formed by Katherine Gailer (Katira, COL) and Lucy Desbordes (Lucy Lucy, FR). The show brings live performances among paintings, installations, motion graphics. Merging voices from disparate cultures, the artists offer unique yet cohesive perspectives on the contemporary weaving of cultures.
The performances among the artworks creates an immersive journey through movement, sound, and cultural expression. The curated program features 5 performance acts which invites reflection and cultural dialogue.
Number of acts: 5 Representation: 4 continents, multiple nationalities and people with diverse abilities. Format: Live performances Setting: Surrounded by installations and hanging artworks Performance area: At the centre among artworks with the audience surrounding the performers Transitions between acts: Led by an MC, who introduce each performance while allowing time for artists to prepare.
The format of the exhibition allows performance artists to perform among the artworks. Before the show begins, the audience is invited to explore the exhibition, enjoy drinks, and meet the artists and curators.
When the performances starts, the audience is invited to sit around the installations and artworks, while the performers present their work in the center.
This format is flexible and can be adapted to suit different venues.

The project can also be presented as a full exhibition (as it is what the actual scope of the project) with more paintings and installations in addition to the performance-focused format described above. This extended format, including two performance nights, was presented in November 2025 at Meat Market (North Melbourne).
