Liz Carroll (USA) & Kate Burke in concert

The unexpected moments in life can be the most memorable. Like having a whole row of seats to yourself on a long-haul flight. Or being offered a coffee by your boss who you thought never noticed you. Or having the chance to see a world-class international musician in your local small country hall...

USA virtuoso fiddler and composer, Liz Carroll, will open her inaugural Australian tour at Deans Marsh Public Hall on Sunday afternoon, November 3, 2019. Which is all the more astonishing when you realise the size of the sold-out venues she regularly plays to across the US and Europe...

Liz Carroll is an Irish-American musician of extraordinary talent.  She has been hugely influential in shaping contemporary Irish traditional music since she stunned the world by winning the All-Ireland Senior Championships at the age of only 18. From a family of traditional musicians, Liz developed a love for the genre as a child. She advised her parents to “not waste any money” on formal classical music lessons, because she preferred to learn from the local musicians around her in the extensive Irish community of Chicago.

Like fiddle-playing, the art of composition came naturally to Liz, who wrote her first tune at the age of nine. “A melody came to me that didn’t exist anywhere else,” said Liz. “This felt very special; different from learning a tune, or varying one, or hearing one for the first time.” Many of Liz’s tunes have entered the traditional repertoire, played and recorded by Irish musicians the world over.

Liz is here in Australia for the first time to take part in the annual QuasiTrad Tunes Camp, being held in the Otway Ranges over the Melbourne Cup Weekend. The world-class musician will share her skills and mentor 40 participants in tune-writing and traditional music. Many of the camp participants are the cream of Australia’s Celtic music composers and players.

Joining Liz in concert is Kate Burke, an Australian-Irish multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer. Always a favourite at festivals, Kate is best known for her work with the duo Kate & Ruth, and Irish band 'Trouble in the Kitchen'. Kate and Liz will headline the concert, which will also feature the stellar line-up of local musicians participating in the Tunes Camp.

An intimate country hall concert with the Liz Carroll - this is definitely one of life’s unexpected moments worth savouring!

Liz Carroll is one of the biggest names in Irish fiddle and plays to sell out concerts all over the globe. Be the envy of the world and see her in the beautiful, intimate setting of this small country hall. Liz will be joined by singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and much-loved Australian performer, Kate Burke. Sit back and enjoy the best of Irish, American and Australian music.
