Balance - Transience (Dave Jones)

Balance is a new work commissioned by the Australian Children’s Theatre Foundation, with a strong environmental message that gets children actively involved in the exploration of sustainability, recycling and alternative power generation. Part game, part play, with a whimsical but compelling narrative this interactive performance is an exciting blend of puppetry, electronics, animation and live theatre, with a strong focus on active participation. Balance gives the audience hands on experience and a chance to step up and save the world.

The centerpiece of the show is a spectacular kinetic sculpture of the island - a mechanical clockwork island complete with clockwork homes, a clockwork jungle and a handful of happy clockwork islanders. But as the story begins, this idyllic island world finds itself running perilously low on the resources it needs to keep itself afloat. As the faltering island descends into darkness, the audience must step in to save the situation and find alternative means to get the island back on track. Their ideas, their problem-solving skills and their physical input are the only thing that can save the island. Balance will give the audience a firsthand insight into the key concepts of sustainability and alternate energy leave students in a humorous and hands on way.

As the story progresses and more elements are brought into play, the children will need to find the most efficient path to bring the island back to life.
