A Play in A Day by Deirdre Marshall

Available online throughout 2021

A Play In A Day has been developed as an immersive theatre making program to be delivered remotely with the artist. The program is delivered in two stages:

Stage 1 consists of an Introduction to Drama Performance and Script Writing, featuring a workshop in which participants are immersed in drama activities and the play development process through improvisation and sketch creation, and Project Development, consisting of small and large brainstorming sessions and script planning.

Stage 2 consists of Rehearsals and Performance, which can be run independently by the school or with support from the artist throughout the rehearsal process.

The program is highly interactive and allows students and teachers to work collaboratively with the artist to develop their own unique play for performance. Following completion of Stage 1 of the project, the artist will work with the student material to develop a short playscript for the students to rehearse and perform. The artist will send the completed script to the school for Stage 2 which, depending on the school’s need, can be rehearsed under the supervision of the co-ordinating teacher or remotely by the artist. Once ready, the play can be performed for the rest of the school, the school community, or developed further for public performance.

As a result of the remote delivery, this program offers a great deal of flexibility around timetabling, allowing the school to negotiate the opportunity to continue working with the artist throughout Stage 2 if needed.

A Play In a Day provides the perfect opportunity for teachers to work with a passionate and experienced teaching-artist to support the education programs within the school and build their confidence in integrating elements of the drama curriculum into their own classrooms. This program has developed out of the conversations with teachers, especially in regional primary schools, who would like to offer their students the opportunity to experience drama, to use drama skills to explore aspects of the curriculum, and to develop creativity and resilience.
