Illuminated by Fire

The Cook and the Woodcutter is a creation of artist Trevor Flinn. Trevor has worked with the Dunkeld community to create a two-channel video piece that showcases the art of woodcutting and splitting, and the use of fire by local cooks to create a favourite dish.

Trevor also compiled a souvenir cookbook containing favourite recipes from 15 local cooks. These recipes range from old favourites like fruit cake and lemon delicious pudding to more unusual inclusions like ‘sour dough rye bagels’ and ‘slow rabbit stew.’

The project launched Friday October 22 at 7.30pm at the Dunkeld Memorial Hall, Sterling St Dunkeld as part of the Discover Dunkeld festival.

During installation week in Melbourne, The Cook and the Woodcutter was housed at ArtPlay, where Trevor taught fire-lighting and scone-baking workshops to kids. Illuminated by Fire Night Tours concluded at ArtPlay where Trevor and his crew of helpers were serving up fresh scones and tea. See the program here: Dunkeld program

Trevor is a recent graduate of the VCA (2004), majoring in Fine Art, Sculpture, and moved back to his home town of Dunkeld soon after graduation. Over the last few years Trevor’s practice has evolved and he is currently interested in creating video works that involve people telling fascinating stories. Humour is a recurrent and important element in Trevor’s work, as are beautiful images for which is he is on the constant look out for.
