Remembering the Dead: Stories from the Grave
The Admella 150 Festival celebrated a milestone anniversary of the Admella wreck off the coast near Portland, with historic involvement shared between South Australian and Victorian communities. The Glenelg Shire saw an opportunity to develop a theatre project reflecting themes of the festival and based on the stories of those buried at the historic cemetery.
Joanne Davis worked with various groups and individuals in the community to create stories, perform songs and establish vingettes throughout the cemetery. The audience were led around the cemetery while the sun set, stopping at various places to hear pieces the performers wrote, produced and acted.
The show included performers of all ages within a diverse cross-section of the community. Over the two-night performance, six hundred audience members attended armed with torches and umbrellas. Performers involved in the show included: the Portland Brass Band; Cockatoo Valley Song Group; Bayview College; The Town Crier, the Mayor playing himself and several talented individuals.

This project was supported by the Admella 150 Festival and Regional Arts Victoria.
