Project Skills and Development Grants Round 2, 2011
$102,745 ANNOUCED FOR REGIONAL ARTISTS AND COMMUNITIES IN VICTORIA
The Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development, Local Government and the Arts, the Hon Simon Crean MP has announced a total of $102,745 of funding for regional and rural communities across Victoria. Ten projects have been funded through the highly competitive Regional Arts Fund, an Australian Government program delivered in Victoria by Regional Arts Victoria.
The Chair of Regional Arts Victoria, Dennis Goldner, spoke with enthusiasm about the cultural and social benefits this funding will bring to regional Victoria: “The wide variety of projects and events this funding is supporting will provide opportunities for every member of each participating community to become involved. Creative expression is such a vital ingredient in our regional areas because it has the potential to enrich lives and enhance the development of community life. We certainly appreciate and thank the federal government for their role in assisting community wellbeing through the provision of this funding.”
Successful applicants in Round 2, 2011 include:
- We’re Still Here – an exciting contemporary photographic exploration of the small regional town of Tongala. From photographer Shaun C. Mackrell.
- A large scale live theatre event called STEAM! To be presented at the Goldsmith Steam Rally 2012 featuring pouring molten metal, grand and powerful steam traction engines and surreal steampunk performers.
- A film-making project called Pacific Stories – Stories of The Murray in Robinvale where 12 local community members from Pacific Islander and ATSI backgrounds will be supported to develop and produce a series of short-films exploring cultural identity, connection and story-telling.
- (f)route CARTography – a unique arts initiative being developed in Gippsland bringing artists and fruitists together to explore the art of cultural MAPPING through the knowledge of fruit and life!

The Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development, Local Government and the Arts, the Hon Simon Crean MP has announced a total of $104,855 of funding for regional and rural communities across Victoria. Ten projects have been funded through the highly competitive Regional Arts Fund, an Australian Government program delivered in Victoria by Regional Arts Victoria.
The Chair of Regional Arts Victoria, Dennis Goldner, spoke about the opportunities that will be provided to the community through this round of funding. “It is a wonderful result to have 50% of the funded projects involving young people across the state, participating in a broad range of artistic disciplines and ideas. Art is a vital element in regional communities and enriches the lives of young people. This result shows that the federal government appreciates their regional constituents and recognizes the role young people and the arts play in community wellbeing.” said Goldner.
Successful applicants in Round 1, 2011 include:
- ‘52 Flash Mobs in 52 Weeks’ - a concept from Viral Arts Lab that will engage a social media artist to mentor the St Andrews Youth (SAY) in St Andrews. Coordinated by the Arts and Culture Division of Nillumbik Shire Council, the group will embark on an ambitious 52 Flash Mobs in 52 Weeks project aiming to teach young people about the creation of strong community outcomes through social media
- In Bairnsdale, East Gippsland Art Gallery will engage local primary school students to work with the Water Watch organisation and local artists on a project entitled H20 Squared. They will create a touring exhibition about regional water catchments while strengthening East Gippsland Art Gallery’s ongoing engagement with isolated communities.
- An exciting collaboration between the City of Ballarat, Platform Youth Theatre and young people in Ballarat, GRIT is a theatre residency project that works with young single mums from the Link-Up program & Ballarat's ‘Mayte’ youth theatre to create a new piece of theatre.
- In Portland, artist Catherine Bailey will create a large sea hammock on the foreshore that reflects the experience of being under the sea on the dry land, as part of the Upwelling Festival.

The Regional Arts Fund is an Australian Government initiative that provides all Australians in regional and remote areas better access to opportunities to practice and experience the arts. The Regional Arts Fund also aims to increase opportunities for isolated Indigenous and/or smaller regional communities. The Regional Arts Fund supports sustainable cultural development in communities across regional, remote and very remote Australia by facilitating cultural partnerships and networks, assisting the professional development and employment of regional artists, and by funding community arts projects.

The Chair of Regional Arts Victoria, Dennis Goldner, commented on the exciting partnerships and collaborative projects in the second and final round of funding for 2010. “A very positive mix of established artists, emerging artists, community organisations and local councils will be working together on various projects. The ten successful applications selected by the panel in a highly competitive round will surely have a resounding impact in towns and communities across Victoria,” says Goldner.

The Minister for the Arts, the Hon Peter Garrett AM, has announced that funding for will go to regional and rural communities across Victoria through the Regional Arts Fund, an Australian Government program delivered on behalf of the Australian Government in Victoria by Regional Arts Victoria.
Chair of Regional Arts Victoria, Dennis Goldner, commented on the increase in grant applicants with innovative art outcomes for regional Victoria.
“There were some very dynamic art project applications submitted in this round, with nine very exciting collaborations recommended by the panel,” says Goldner. “The ‘Toe in the Water’ Category has enabled funding for projects for the very first time which will engage many different groups in the community. We are also delighted that funding will be going to projects that celebrate local identity and diverse cultures in communities across Victoria.”

The Minister for the Arts, the Hon Peter Garrett AM, has announced that funding for 8 projects totalling $69,800 will go to regional, rural and remote communities across Victoria through the Regional Arts Fund, an Australian Government program administered in Victoria by Regional Arts Victoria.
Chair of Regional Arts Victoria Dennis Goldner noted that the funded projects came from all over Victoria, including the North-East, Gippsland and South-East Victoria. “The board of Regional Arts Victoria was pleased to see a range of art forms represented this round, including music, photography, film and dance. We are also particularly pleased to see funding going to projects involving Indigenous artists, as well as a project which involves artists with a disability.”

"This round was very competitive," newly-appointed Chair of Regional Arts Victoria Dennis Goldner said.
