The successes of the pilot Eco-Cubby program, a new initiative between the City of Melbourne and arts2GO in 2009, keep on coming. With more than 300 students from ten schools across Victoria working with architects in the development of their very own eco cubby house, a collaborative Eco-Cubby is about to be built as part of the Royal Melbourne Show.
Through the support of SACS Consulting, Eco-Cubby will be featured in the Kids Zone Pavilion at the Royal Melbourne Show from 17 to 27 September. Located near the Working with Wood stand, the Eco-Cubby exhibition will have architects ready to speak with people about sustainable living principles and its very own eco cubby house which children add their own sustainable living ideas to. Textas, tissue paper, ribbons and glue will all be available for young people to illustrate the cubby in what they understand to be sustainable design principles.
Students participating in the current program at schools throughout the state have been documenting their progress and designs on the Eco-Cubby website www.eco-cubby.com. The ‘Report Group’ from Alphington Primary School have recently updated the blog on the Eco-Cubby website, detailing the progress of the Master Design and Survey Groups who have concluded that bamboo is the preferred building material, and a slide and Fireman’s pole must be part of the design. Meanwhile, Bundalaguah Primary School have finished their final design and model with architects Kirsty Fletcher (Rexroth Mannasmann Collective) and Jon Pye (Jon Pye Architects). The final images and 1:10 scale model are available for viewing on the blog.
Come and visit arts2GO and City of Melbourne at the Royal Melbourne Show, and let us know your thoughts on the leading sustainable living principles.
