William Kelly Exhibition - The Heart of the Matter

4th June 2012

William Kelly exhibition tileWilliam Kelly Exhibition - The Heart of the Matter, Large and Small Works on Life, Hope, Courage & Love
7th June - 1st July 2012

William Kelly has been called "a gifted draughtsman," who "... explores human space and human images and the poetry of markmaking." These works express his profound belief in the possibilities for a better future. In them he reflects on places and events that have moved him deeply – from the courage of the single man who stood before a tank in Tiananmen Square to the frailty of belief of a young Japanese woman who quilted a piece of head gear in the hope that it would protect her from disaster.' Many artists have begun to address issues of society, environment and human rights. Kelly has been a leader in this in Australia and internationally - engaging in these issues for decades creating art with ideas that until very recently, as fellow artist Godwin Bradbeer has written, "have been rarely and only marginally addressed by mainstream contemporary artists and institutions." When critics write of Kelly's work, as well as descriptive words like quality, ability, drawing skills, accomplished painter/printmaker, they also use words like love, poignant, peace, courage, hope, pathos, openness and poetry. For Kelly these ideas, words, images which become part of the viewer's experience are at "The Heart of the Matter". Click here for more details.
