Arts in Times of Crisis: Regional Arts Victoria Symposium 2009
4th March 2009
Regional Arts Victoria will be holding its State Symposium in Geelong in October 2009 on The Role of Arts in Times of Crisis with a focus on regional and rural Victoria, and developing partnerships between professionals in the fields of health and arts in an attempt to generate discussion on how they may work together in times of need.
The term 'crisis' can be invoked when communities are affected by a number of factors, changing climate, economy, loss of industry, changing population, or the challenge to keep young people in regional areas to name but a few. Regional communities often feel these effects more keenly than their metropolitan counterparts and the damage can be substantial and enduring.
So what does crisis mean to you? And what role do the arts play in the way communities deal with crisis?
Please comment here - we would love to know your thoughts, ideas, or any examples of ways you have seen or heard of that used the arts (such as Regional Arts Victoria's Fresh & Salty Project) as a vehicle to deal with crisis on a global, local, or even personal level.
To stay up to date on this year's symposium, please see the project page, or email Joe Toohey.

Poignant and timely

As crises go, what rural Victoria has just experienced is beyond imagination. I hope that people can find expression and share their stories, which remind us all of what is important.

I agree. I think that by October, when the symposium is held, we will have a better idea of the various ways in which regional communities in Victoria have responded to the recent fires.
