The Hole Big Yarn - nearly there!
27th April 2009
UPDATE - knitting & crochet project getting ready to go into the landscape:
The south west Panmure community project The Hole Big Yarn is close to finishing with only a few sessions to go before the big unveiling on Sunday 31st May, 2.00pm at the Panmure swimming hole. This will be a one day only event so grab your friends/family and animals and come along to the hole.
Participants have worked hard to produce knitting and crocheted pieces for this lovely project that will be placed into the landscape at the iconic Panmure swimming hole locals call 'the big hole'. With a core group of participants from Panmure and a range of helpers from across the region, the project is gaining momentum for a great outcome on site at the end of May.
For more information or to receive an invite to the unveiling in May please contact Jo Grant on jgrant@rav.net.au

Such beautiful work. There's something about the art of knitting that inspires a feeling of comfort, coziness and happiness. The humour and beauty wrapped together. There was an interesting article in The Age on the weekend about the chorus from opera Australia knitting for the bushfire recovery.
Best wishes for the unveiling. Hope to see you there!
great article...

How wonderful, thanks for the article, I love that!
I can't recommend knitting enough - there's a meditative quality about it (minus the RSI we're all feeling at the moment).
Kim, Tully thanks you for acknowledging the important work he is doing on this project - there is much to protect (and quite a lot of sleeping to do too).
looking good!

What an outstanding project. I love the projection of a domestic art that is often seen as old fashioned and 'women's business' onto a rural landscape, particularly with all the ceremony of a public launch. I am sure that the a key benefit of this project has been the collaboration and social interaction amongst the participants. I love the colours and textures that have been produced and there is such a wide variety of styles and techniques, all with an intrinsic value and comment to make about the local landscape. I'd love to be at the launch - make sure you post plenty of photos of it. Well done all of you!
how about....

I think the hole big yarn project is really good! i like the knitting and finger knitting. I think its going to look really good when we put it all up. we have been working really hard at school and at home. we have had one day a week at school working on it and that is during art. I often go to the Big Hole in the summer time. It will look very intreresting.
Fabulous

The thing that I love about this project is that we have in so many ways neglected the landscape. I watched the Australian Story episodes about Peter Andrews, a man of great courage and great patience with his undying belief in the land's own wisdom. He has continued to fight for recognition of his method for healing the degradation of the land.
Art has the capacity to express the inexpressible, and, what I see in this Project, is the nurture that the participants have bestowed upon the landscape by clothing it with hand-knitted artworks. This demonstration of care for the landscape draws our attention to the need for us to respect our beloved Australian land.
