FINISHING 2010 - City of Riddles - Polyglot

City of Riddles is the newest work from Polyglot, creators of the award-winning, international touring smash hit successes Check Out!, Headhunter and Muckheap. City of Riddles is an interactive installation performance where children take an active part in the creation of an imagined world. Set in a landscape of a ruinous city, the space is full of little buildings, scattered around an large black cube, mysterious and atmospheric. The audience finds its way through the buildings, peering inside each one like giants in a miniature world. Each building has a specific place on the cube, and gradually the whole physical puzzle is put together. Then the story begins.
City of Riddles explores the fluid concept of truth, our preoccupation with our own space, and individual and group responsibility. We ask the question, ‘If you had the chance to do it all again – what would you do differently?’. The text utilises word play and enigma to create an intriguing and mischievous atmosphere in a fantastical world. Through a dramatic storyline the audience will be drawn into making the choices that decide the city’s ultimate fate, facilitated by three performers ‘in the round’, as they move and manipulate the objects in the space. The audience for City of Riddles is sometimes outside the action, sometimes inside the action. They are time travellers, integral to the action and able to change history.
Polyglot also offers practical workshops for children in which their own artwork becomes a part of the City of Riddles. Please indicate when booking if you would like to take part!
