Zines: Publish Yourself!
In Zines: Publish Yourself! students will learn what a zine is, how they can be created, and how to make their own.
Zines are the ultimate in self-publishing creativity – anyone can create a zine, regardless of how little (or how much) they have at their disposal! From black-and-white photocopied pages to elaborate collages of images and text, a zine is a unique expression of thought and creative process that taps into the individual interests and potential of each student.
This two-hour workshop will begin with a short history of zine making, and will encourage students to think critically about the pervasiveness of media in our culture. Participants will then be challenged to reconceptualise these images and messages into their own new media creation – a zine.
At workshop’s conclusion, students will have created one page of a zine that they can further develop outside of the classroom.
A dynamic and contemporary workshop that is sure to engage students in literacy, publishing, and design.
