Regional Arts Victoria and Arena Theatre Company proudly present the return of the Multi-award winning production Moth, By Declan Greene.
Sebastian (Thomas Conroy) is a terminally unpopular fifteen-year-old suburban kid, with an overactive imagination and an obsession with anime and death. His only friend, Claryssa (Emily Goddard), is an emo Wiccan art-freak barely one rung higher than Sebastian on the social ladder. What starts as just another night drinking down at the cricket nets soon gives way to an ecstatic vision that leaves Sebastian unconscious, their friendship left in ruin. The next morning, he wakes up with a mysterious moth in a jar by his bed, and a calling to save the souls of all humankind. And so begins the Passion of Sebastian…
Moth is a contemporary Australian story for teenagers and their families, addressing issues associated with the youth mental health crisis facing both regional and metropolitan Australian communities. Moth avoids stigmatisation and contains a depiction of teenage mental illness that is responsible and authentic. It works to generate discussion around such issues by casting the light on them without judgement.
Moth is critical theatre for young audiences, and will generate discussion around issues which may be little understood or considered taboo. The play was written in consultation with young people and Declan Greene was himself only 24 when he wrote the play. This means young audiences will recognise themselves in the play, an essential aspect of audience engagement. It is critical theatre for young people in regional areas, who often have significantly less access to support services.
This funny and moving exploration of teenage mental illness is performed by dynamic young actors Thomas Conroy (2010 Green Room Award winner, Best Male Performer) and Emily Goddard (2011 Green Room Award nominee, Best Female Performer).
