KITA Performing Arts Company
KITA Performing Arts Company presents the traditional and contemporary performing arts of Asia. KITA members are equally at home in professional theatre or in communities, schools and festivals where they create their own contemporary dance works.
KITA is an Indonesian word that means “we”. We chose this word for our name because of its Indonesian meaning, and also because the letters of the word stand for our home countries: Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan and our new homeland of Australia.
Since 2001, KITA members have been performing in schools, artist in residency projects and collaborating in corporate events, and creative community development projects. We have also toured Victoria with Regional Arts Victoria’s arts2GO program since 2003.
KITA was set up in 2001 by Box Hill Institute performing art lecturer, Kim Dunphy and three of her graduate students of Asian backgrounds. Nixson Eduard, Seung Hi and Sabrina Wei-Lung Chou. Their performing expertise and teaching skills from graduate training and their professional experience as dancers in their countries as well, combined with Kim’s background in arts education and management , made for a great team, and KITA was born.
KITA aims:
• To provide live theatre performances that are entertaining and educational
• To offer Australian people exposure to the traditional culture and performing arts of our Asian neighbours
• To offer learning experience through that enrich a range of educational curriculum areas including performing arts, SOSE (especially Asian studies), LOTE and English
• To provide Asian performing artists with opportunities to share their cultural
heritage.
• To create innovative contemporary dance work collaborating with Australian culture based on Asian traditional forms.
KITA will be touring statewide from 9 to 19 March 2010 with their performance Martial Funk.
